CHARACTER

Narrator- Influenced by Joe Dillon, the Wild West and the adventures fascinate him. In his spare time he plays “Indian battle” with his friends. At school he reads Wild West storybooks that gets passed around amongst the boys. Curious a boy he is, the desire to experience greater adventure sets him to skip school one day to roam around Dublin.

Mahoney- He goes to the same school as the narrator and companies him to the adventure around Dublin wharf.

Joe Dillon- Narrator’s friend, who introduces the Wild West to him. In the great library that he has at home are numeral books on Wild West, which catches the narrator’s attention With his brother Leo, Joe and the narrator, they play “Indian battle” at his house every morning when his parents go to mass.

Leo Dillon- Joe’s fat younger brother who plays “Indian battle” with his brother and the narrator. He plans to join Mahoney and the narrator on the adventure around Dublin wharf but backs out at the last moment.

The Old Man- Pedophilic elderly who is met by the boys in the wharf. At the time of encounter, he is lamely idling around the wharf. His identity is not told in the story but we can assume that he is a drunken drop out from society. This can be concluded from what the narrator describes his looks; yellow teeth, gaped smile and occasional twitches. His mention on the hatred towards boys with girlfriends and the pleasure he gets when chasterising boys represent his disturbing past.
